Ancients can be an obstacle playing solo as well. Trapsin can run pretty well, and the pseudo-auras BoS and Fade are incredibly useful, but you will have to rely on Fire Blast to kill lightning immunes in Hell, which is a pain with bad gear. You have to decide between running a single element to max damage or running hybrid to solo with slower clear times. Sorceress has the fastest travel speed with Teleport, but without good gear you will need to play cautiously or die constantly, and you will have lots of areas you can’t clear thanks to immunities.
Areas with high enemy density will go fast with Corpse Explosion (Chaos Sanctuary), but bosses can be slow and your options for farming are limited. Summonmancer could be safer if you’re HC, but your kill speed will be so much slower I can’t honestly recommend it for SC as your first character. Hardest part of the game is Maggot Lair, which you have to have a Teleport Staff for (shop A3 normal Ormus), since your hammers won’t hit anything in there. Paladin is so ridiculously tanky to begin with (3 life/vit, increased block %, Holy Shield, Salvation, +res on Pal shields), and almost nothing is immune to hammers (just the horadrim in the enemy waves before Baal mostly), it’s an absolute cakewalk compared to sorceress if you’re starting from nothing.
Hammerdin is just so easy to build now that ladder runewords are available, just make your first Spirit sword with Larzuk in normal after farming cows for a base, then make your shield in NM (every single white paladin shield gets 4 sockets), make Lore helm and Smoke armor from anything, and you’re in easy mode until hell. I started with Sorc since it’s the class I played the most in original D2, but Hammerdin was 10x easier and I’ve parked my Sorc until I can farm more gear with my Hammerdin because it’s so much better at clearing without dying or avoiding immunes.
